About
Haiti Design Co was founded in 2014 with the goal to bring about sustainable development through design, training, and job creation. Their mantra around the workshop is "men anpil, chay pa lou," an old Haitian proverb meaning, "many hands make the load light." Haiti Design Co believes that there is commonality between the designer, maker, and consumer and that when working together we can help lighten each other's load and bring about lasting positive impact.
Little by little, their small workshop has grown and evolved into a training and production center employing over 150 people within their workshop and partner branches. They work to provide consistent employment in-house in order to give job training and stability to individuals in vulnerable situations, as well as raise up artisan leaders to succeed as independent entrepreneurs in the community.

Haiti is a Caribbean nation located on the western side of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Haitians are an incredibly resilient people who have overcome many challenges. In fact, Haiti was the first colony in the world to gain independence after a successful revolution in 1804. The official languages of Haiti are French and Creole, a unique blend of French, Spanish, indigenous Caribbean, and West African languages.

Another grant recipient, Michel-Ange, is a visionary entrepreneur who was able to build her own workshop–and now employs women in need in her community.

KenideKenide learned metalworking from her dad and is now a key member of the Haitian jewelry team. After her husband passed away, having a team alongside her has meant even more. In Kenide’s words, “My team collaborates a lot and we are always helping each other out. I have so much respect for every woman that I get to work with.” Kenide holds the workshop’s motto of Men anpil chay pa lou close to her heart: With many hands, the work is light.

Kavakia & VedetteKavakia and her mother Vedette have risen above countless obstacles. Vedette raised Kavakia as a single mother, and dreamed that her daughter would one day experience financial stability–a dream that is now coming true thanks to the workshop where the women both work. “This job keeps my family and my life strong and holds everything in place,” Kavakia shares. “Men always seem to be the superstars in the family, but not mine. My mom and me get to be the superstars of our family.”
