Dien's Sewing Workshop

Nguyen Trai, Vietnam

Partners since 2017

About

Dien is the leader of the sewing and embroidery group where our beautiful Vietnamese textile pieces are crafted. Based in Nguyen Trai village, Dien has 35 years of experience in sewing, embroidery and beading. She was born and raised in a family where working with these skills was second nature, and her passion for sewing and embroidery started early.

After getting married, Dien put her passion to work and started a small sewing workshop in her village. Today, her workshop is filled with vibrant textiles ready to be transformed into unique accessories, and provides dignified work for Dien’s family and other women in the neighborhood. In addition to the women who work from the workshop, some of Dien’s Artisans are able to work from home, allowing them to earn a fair income while caring for their children and elderly parents.

Nguyen Trai, Vietnam

Vietnam is one of the most populous countries in the world and stretches along the coast of the South China Sea. Beginning in 1954, Vietnam was partitioned into two countries, and was reunified in 1976. Vietnam places a high value on education and has a literacy rate of 96%. Handcrafts are also highly valued as cultural treasures; over 2700 villages in Vietnam are known as "craft villages" because they have specialized in a particular handcraft for hundreds of years.

Flourishing World Initiative Grant Recipient

Ms. Su

Su was born into a family that had been sewing and embroidering for generations. From a young age, she saw her family members creating beautiful traditional textiles, and carrying on this tradition felt like a natural fit for her. After joining Dien’s workshop, her work has helped her give her three children the life she wanted for them. Over 30 years since she began her Artisan journey, Su still loves getting to create special pieces for customers around the world.

Ms. Tho

Like many of Dien’s Artisans, Tho comes from a traditional sewing family and learned to stitch alongside her siblings nearly 40 years ago. Today, Tho’s children are grown and married – but her flexible job continues to allow her to support her family. She works part - time from her home, which has enabled her to care for her nephew during the day. Tho shares that her job is helping her save money as she gets older, giving her peace of mind for her future.
